This is the information that we have learned about Diana, the youngest child in Nathan's first family with his wife Lucinda:Birth
From the Ontario Vital Statistics of 1871, reference #004-972:
Name: Henrietta When: July 28 1871 Where: Woolwich Township Sex: Female Mother: Lucinda Randall Father: Nathan Uttley, Laborer, Woolwich Doctor: Dr. WalmsleyDiana is baptized at the Wesleyan Methodist church in Elmira within a month as recorded in the Wesleyan Methodist Baptismal Registers, Vol 3 pg 782:
Name: Uetley, Diana Born: 29 July 71 Where: Elmira Parents: Nathan + L (Elmira) Baptized: 11 Aug 71 By: Geo Fergusson, Elmira
Diana (Annie) Uttley -- 1871-1960
- The Archive lists Henrietta, the name of Diana's older sister who was born on 17 October 1865. The 1901 Census records Annie, age 29, born on July 28, 1871. Nathan's family bible concurs, listing the birth of Diannah on 28 July 1871.
- It may seen strange to refer to Lucinda as just "L" in the baptisal register. George Fergusson, the minister, just gave initials to five other mothers on the same page. That was his solution when space in the column was tight.
- This is the last direct reference known to Nathan's first wife Lucinda Randall while she was alive.
The 1901 Census lists Annie, age 29, working as a servant girl at the home of Ephraim and Lillie Erb on Church Street in Berlin.
The Vernon City Directory of 1925 shows her working at 304 Frederick Street in Kitchener with the Stumpf family. Annie continued to work with this family until at least 1941. Frederick Street was once a street of large homes near the downtown core. Today it has been redeveloped with many government buildings, federal, provincial and regional.
Death
From the "Deaths" column of the K-W Record, December 28, 1960:
UTTLEY, Miss Dianne, 247 Franklin Ave., Dec 28, 89 years. The accompanying obituary reads:
Miss Dianne Uttley
Miss Dianne (Annie) Uttley, 89, of 247 Franklin Ave., died there today.
Born July 28, 1871, she was a daughter of the late Nathan Uttley, Sr., and his wife, the former Caroline Randall.
The body is at the Keffer Funeral Home, where the funeral will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. Rev. Alan Calder of Trinity United Church will officiate. Burial will be in Waterloo Mount Hope Cemetery.![]()
Notes:
- this is one additional confirmation that Nathan's first wife was a Randall and not a Linder, but where did the name "Caroline" come from? Diana was the last child of Nathan and his first wife Lucinda Randall.
- 247 Franklin Ave in 1960 was the brand new Sunnyside Home for the Aged. Today it has expanded somewhat and is the "Sunnyside Home" operated by the regional government. The name Sunnyside comes from the area in the east end of Kitchener where there are schools and streets also named Sunnyside.
- how should one spell her given name?
- the old family Bible entry, presumably written by Nathan reads "Diannah Uttley July 28 1871",
- Nathan's Last Will records this daughter from the first family as Dianah,
- her headstone reads "DIANA UTTLEY/DIED 1960",
- the cemetery records at Mount Hope and the K-W Record obituary spell it Dianne.
